Mandelic Acid: A Gentle Exfoliant That Gets Real Results.
Hiya there pals! Welcome to The Acid Edit, a blog series where we do a deep dive into different acids in skincare. I am SO stoked you landed here and are ready to learn about all things SKN!
Today we are deep diving into a AHA that has only started to really become more talked about in the last few years; Mandelic Acid.
What is Mandelic Acid?
Not all exfoliating acids are created equal. Some work quickly but can be irritating, while others deliver slower, more controlled results with minimal downtime. Mandelic acid falls into the second category, making it one of the more versatile and skin friendly exfoliating acids in clinical skincare!
Derived from bitter almonds, mandelic acid is part of the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) family. It has a larger molecular size, which allows it to penetrate the skin more slowly than other AHAs like glycolic acid. This slower penetration makes mandelic acid significantly less irritating while still delivering powerful skin benefits. Mandelic acid works by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells which allows them to shed easier.
Acne & Pigment Fighting
One of mandelic acid's most valuable benefits is its ability to support acne-prone skin! In addition to exfoliating the surface, mandelic acid has antibacterial properties that help inhibit acne causing bacteria. It also helps keep pores clearer by preventing the buildup of dead skin cells and oil that can contribute to congestion.
Unlike harsher acids that can trigger inflammation, mandelic acid helps treat acne while being far less disruptive to the skin barrier!
Mandelic acid is also well known for its ability to improve hyperpigmentation and uneven tone. By increasing cell turnover and gently exfoliating pigmented cells, mandelic acid can help fade sun spots, P.I.H (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), melasma, uneven skintone.
Mandelic Acid at Sénse of SKN
At sénse of SKN, there are multiple different mandelic acid products. One of my favourites being the Glymed Idyllic Cleanser which contains 3% mandelic acid. This cleanser gently exfoliates dead skin cells, brightens dull skin, improves uneven skin tone, and fights acne causing bacteria. It also contains barrier supporting ingredients like glycerin, green tea extracts, chamomile, vitamin e, & more.
Another option in a serum form is the Glymed Radiant Serum which is a 1% mandelic acid serum. It also contains peptides to support collagen production while improving overall firmness of the skin and softening fine lines. This serum is fantastic for people who are acne prone, but also wanting to fight aging and pigment.
In the skin world, stronger isn’t always better. Mandelic acid is the calm, cute, and collected active that delivers real results without irritation the skin.
